Medical Excellence JAPAN (MEJ) was established with the support of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to promote the globalization of Japan’s medical services as public and private partnership under the philosophy of mutually beneficial international cooperation. From 2011, MEJ has offered support for foreign patients to receive advanced medical treatments in Japan. And, April 2013, MEJ was reformed to the organization focusing on the expansion of Japan-style superior medical services to the world.

Today, the global trend in medical care is toward less-invasive therapies that not only cure serious illnesses, but also minimize the burden on the patient’s body. In Japan, under the universal national health insurance system, various less-invasive treatments are provided by top-skilled physicians with state-of-the-art medical expertise and advanced medical devices. Furthermore, a regular health checkup and the preventive medicine of lifestyle-related disease are offered as a national policy. Thus, Japan is promoting to archive the best of healthy longevity society ahead of the world and expand Japan-style medical services with medical devices, education and medical and insurance systems as a package.

MEJ became a member of the Medical Globalization Task Force in the Government and serves the secretariat function on the private sector. MEJ is promoting the development of international cases, mutual understanding of medical services of Japan and partner countries, and the improvement of the medical level of partner countries in collaboration with medical institutions, medical device and drag companies, and financial and insurance companies. Partner countries mean emerging countries in medical services. As economic growth proceeds in these countries, medical services become more important and the necessity to introduce an advanced medical system will increase. Therefore, MEJ has offered support for patients of partner countries to receive advanced less-invasive treatments in Japanese medical institutions and widely recognize the outstanding features of Japan’s medical services. Furthermore, the international projects to establish Japan-style medicine institutes/centers in partner countries have been started the investigation.
